About Add N to (X)

Add N to (X) emerged from London’s vibrant electronic scene in 1994 as a groundbreaking trio dedicated to bridging vintage synthesizer technology with forward-thinking musical innovation. Founded by Ann Shenton and Barry Smith, the group shared a profound admiration for proto-electronica and the pioneering sounds of ‘60s and ‘70s electronic pioneers like Varèse, Xenakis, Wendy Carlos, and Pierre Henry. Their lineup was soon completed by theremin specialist Steven Claydon, whose unique contribution enriched their futuristic yet organic sonic palette.

The band’s debut album, "Vero Electronics" (1996), introduced a propulsive and experimental style marked by a blend of mechanical precision and live, organic rhythms—often supported by collaborators like Stereolab’s Andy Ramsay. This energetic fusion earned them comparisons to influential acts such as Suicide, especially noted in their intense, dynamic live performances. Add N to (X) continued to evolve with albums like "On the Wires of Our Nerves" (1998) and "Avant Hard" (1999), pushing the boundaries of electro-experimentation. Their 2000 release, "Add Insult to Injury," signaled a shift toward more accessible, pop-tinged sounds without sacrificing their avant-garde edge.

Renowned as electro-historians, Add N to (X) carved out a distinct niche by celebrating and revitalizing vintage synthesizer culture. Their provocative aesthetic—highlighted by album art showing Shenton surgically connected to synth equipment—embodied their fusion of man and machine. Although disbanding in the early 2000s, their legacy remains influential, inspiring electronic musicians and enthusiasts who appreciate the art of analog synth exploration.
