About Ivo Pogorelich

Ivo Pogorelich, born on October 20, 1958, in Belgrade to Croatian and Serbian parents, is widely recognized as one of classical piano’s most original and controversial figures. Displaying prodigious talent from the age of seven, he advanced to Moscow’s Central Music School at twelve and later honed his craft at the prestigious Tchaikovsky Conservatory. His artistic development was profoundly shaped by his mentor and later wife, Aliza Kezeradze, a pupil of Alexander Siloti—thereby linking Pogorelich to the illustrious musical lineage of Franz Liszt.

Pogorelich’s international breakthrough came amid controversy at the 1980 International Chopin Competition in Warsaw. Despite being eliminated in the third round, his unconventional interpretations prompted famed pianist Martha Argerich to resign from the jury in protest, catapulting him into the global spotlight. This tumultuous moment paved the way for his 1981 Carnegie Hall debut and a valuable recording contract with Deutsche Grammophon, beginning with a critically acclaimed rendition of Prokofiev’s Piano Sonata No. 6.

Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Pogorelich performed with leading orchestras worldwide while also engaging in humanitarian efforts, notably organizing relief concerts during the Bosnian War. After releasing his complete Deutsche Grammophon oeuvre in 2015, he transitioned to Sony Classical, producing notable albums such as Beethoven and Rachmaninov sonatas (2019) and a Chopin recital (2022). With his distinctive blend of intensity, rhythmic innovation, and imaginative insight, Ivo Pogorelich continues to captivate audiences across Europe and North America, cementing his legacy as a daring pioneer in classical piano performance.
