About Grigory Sokolov

Grigory Sokolov, born on April 18, 1950, in Leningrad (now Saint Petersburg), is widely regarded as one of the most exceptional Russian pianists of the late 20th century. Beginning piano lessons at the age of five and studying formally with Liya Zelikhman by seven, he quickly demonstrated extraordinary talent. By fifteen, Sokolov had won first prize at the Russian National Competition, and at just sixteen, he became the youngest ever winner of the prestigious International Tchaikovsky Competition in 1966, cementing his early reputation as a prodigy.

Due to Soviet-era restrictions, Sokolov’s performances were initially limited to the Eastern bloc, delaying his Western debut until the late 1980s. His breakthrough came with a landmark recital in Paris in 1990, which launched his international career. Known for a profound and introspective approach, Sokolov’s repertoire spans classical greats like Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, and Rachmaninov, as well as baroque composers such as Byrd, Couperin, and Rameau, showcasing his remarkable versatility.

Sokolov is selective about recordings, favoring live performances that capture the spontaneity and nuance of each recital. Since partnering with Deutsche Grammophon in 2014, he has released acclaimed live albums, including piano recitals of Schubert, Beethoven, Mozart concertos, and the recent 2024 release, "Purcell & Mozart." Through his unparalleled artistry and dedication to authenticity, Grigory Sokolov continues to inspire and enchant classical music audiences worldwide, securing his legacy as a titan of piano performance.
