About Gojira

Formed in 1996 in Bayonne, France, Gojira is a groundbreaking heavy metal quartet celebrated for its innovative blend of thrash, death, groove, progressive, and math metal. The band consists of brothers Joe Duplantier (vocals/guitar) and Mario Duplantier (drums), alongside Christian Andreu (guitar) and Jean-Michel Labadie (bass). Drawing their name from the Japanese pronunciation of "Godzilla," Gojira began gaining attention with annual demos in the mid-1990s before independently releasing their debut album, "Terra Incognita" (2001). This record introduced their complex, aggressive sound, earning comparisons to heavyweights like Pantera, Meshuggah, and Sepultura.

Their 2005 album, "From Mars to Sirius," marked a turning point, breaking into the French charts and solidifying their reputation through relentless touring with acts such as Machine Head and Obituary. Gojira’s international breakthrough arrived with "L'Enfant Sauvage" (2012), their first major-label release on Roadrunner Records, which achieved top 40 chart positions worldwide. This success continued with the Grammy-nominated "Magma" (2016), and the critically acclaimed "Fortitude" (2021), which featured the impactful single "Born for One Thing" alongside tracks like "Amazonia," earning further Grammy recognition.

Renowned not only for their technical mastery but also for thought-provoking, environmentally conscious lyrics, Gojira made history by performing "Ça Ira" at the 2024 Paris Olympics opening ceremony—the first metal band to do so—securing a 2025 Grammy nomination for Best Metal Performance. Their passionate activism and evolving sound have firmly established Gojira as one of the most influential forces in modern metal.
