About Sunn O)))

Sunn O))) (pronounced "Sun") is a groundbreaking American drone metal duo formed in 1998 by guitarists Stephen O'Malley and Greg Anderson. Initially conceived as an Earth tribute project under the name Mars, the band quickly evolved beyond homage to pioneer a signature sound characterized by hypnotic, low-tuned guitar drones, intense feedback, and minimalist yet thunderous sonic landscapes. Early releases like "The Grimmrobe Demos" (2000) and "00 Void" (2000) laid the foundation for what critics often call "minimal maximalism," a style blending drone metal with dark ambient textures.

Gaining international acclaim with their 2004 album "Black One," featuring guest vocals from Attila Csihar, Sunn O))) became as renowned for their enigmatic live performances—cloaked in hooded robes and enveloped in dense smoke at ear-shattering volumes—as for their music. The duo has remained at the forefront of experimental heavy music, continuously expanding their creative boundaries. Notable collaborations include "Altar" (2006) with Japanese doom legends Boris, "Terrestrials" (2014) with Norwegian experimental group Ulver, and the avant-garde influenced "Soused" (2014) alongside Scott Walker.

In 2019, Sunn O))) released "Life Metal," a seminal album recorded live to analog tape with the legendary Steve Albini, marking a return to raw, organic textures and featuring contributions from artists like Hildur Guðnadóttir. As co-founders of the Southern Lord label, O'Malley and Anderson have profoundly influenced drone, doom, and post-metal genres, continually pushing the limits of sound with albums such as "Monoliths & Dimensions" (2009) and the spiritual-themed "Kannon" (2015). Sunn O))) remains a vital, enduring force in avant-garde heavy music.
