About Nautilus Pompilius

Nautilus Pompilius stands as one of the most influential rock bands to emerge from the Soviet Union, originating in the late 1970s from Sverdlovsk (now Ekaterinburg). Founded in 1978 by architecture students Vyacheslav Butusov and Dmitry Umetsky, the band initially performed Western rock covers under the name "Ali-Baba and the Forty Thieves." Their transformation into Nautilus Pompilius in 1985 coincided with the arrival of the talented vocalist and songwriter Ilya Kormiltsev, marking a pivotal shift toward a more original and synth-driven new wave sound.

Breakthrough came with the 1986 album "Razluka," which propelled them to national fame and ignited what critics dubbed "Nautilus-mania." Their iconic televised performance at Moscow’s Rock Panorama, featuring military-inspired stage attire, showcased how regional talent could captivate the Soviet capital’s audience. Hits like "Knyaz Tishiny" (1989) cemented their status during this golden era. Nautilus Pompilius also expanded into cinema, collaborating with director Andrei Balabanov and contributing to the cult soundtrack for the landmark film "Brat" ("Brother").

Following Umetsky’s departure in 1989, Butusov relocated to St. Petersburg, steering the band toward a rawer, minimalist rock style evident in albums such as "Naugad" (1990) and "Chuzhaya Zemlya" (1992). Throughout the 1990s, Nautilus continued to evolve, working with figures like Boris Grebenshikov and British producer Bill Nelson on "Yablokitay" (1995). Their nearly two-decade career not only shaped Soviet and post-Soviet rock but also solidified their enduring legacy in Russian music history.
