About Academy of St Martin in the Fields

Founded in 1958 by celebrated violinist Neville Marriner, the Academy of St Martin in the Fields is one of the most renowned chamber orchestras in classical music. The ensemble took its name from its debut performance at the Church of St Martin-in-the-Fields in London on November 13, 1959. Distinguished by its pioneering conductorless approach, the orchestra traditionally performs under the leadership of its first violinist, a practice that began with Marriner and continues under later artistic directors such as Iona Brown, Kenneth Sillito, and currently Joshua Bell.

Specializing in Baroque and Classical repertoire, the Academy quickly gained international acclaim for its smooth, unified sound and authentic interpretations. With over 500 recordings to its name, the orchestra’s discography stretches across major labels including Philips, Decca, London, and Deutsche Grammophon. Their most commercially successful project remains the soundtrack for the film "Amadeus" (1984), which brought unprecedented crossover success and topped classical music charts worldwide.

Beyond traditional repertoire, the Academy has expanded its musical horizons through the formation of sub-ensembles like the Chamber Ensemble and a dedicated choir, along with recording contemporary works and film scores. Collaborations with eminent soloists such as pianist Jan Lisiecki and guest conductors like Murray Perahia, who has been principal guest conductor since 2000, have further solidified its status. Today, the Academy of St Martin in the Fields continues to captivate audiences globally with its timeless artistry and innovative yet faithful approach to classical music.
