About Pavement

Pavement emerged from Stockton, California’s underground music scene in 1989 as a pioneering force in American indie rock and the lo-fi movement. Founded by Stephen Malkmus and Scott Kannberg as a studio project, the duo quickly expanded into a full band with eccentric drummer Gary Young, bassist Mark Ibold, and percussionist Bob Nastanovich. Their debut EP, "Slay Tracks: (1933-1969)," recorded on a shoestring budget, garnered underground acclaim. Pavement’s breakthrough came with their 1992 debut album "Slanted & Enchanted," released on Matador Records, which won critical praise for its blend of cryptic lyrics, fragmented melodies, and raw, feedback-drenched sound.

The band's lineup evolved after Young’s departure in 1993, with Steve West stepping in as drummer. Pavement refined their sound on subsequent albums – "Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain" (1994), which featured the near-mainstream hit "Cut Your Hair"; the eclectic and sprawling "Wowee Zowee" (1995); and "Brighten the Corners" (1997), which balanced accessibility with their trademark off-kilter style. Their final studio album, "Terror Twilight" (1999), produced by Nigel Godrich, showcased cleaner production but hinted at internal tensions.

Disbanding the same year, Pavement’s influence on indie and alternative rock remained profound. They reunited in 2010 for a celebrated tour and the release of the compilation "Quarantine the Past: The Best of Pavement." Their groundbreaking approach—marked by Stephen Malkmus’s sharp songwriting and quirky arrangements—continues to inspire generations of musicians worldwide.
