About Ahab

Ahab is a German doom metal trio formed in Esslingen in 2004, known for pioneering a distinctive style they term "Nautik Funeral Doom." Founders Daniel Droste (guitar, keyboards, vocals), Christian Hector (guitar), and Stephan Adolph (bass, backing vocals) initially gained recognition with their 2005 demo "The Oath" and debut single "The Stream." Drawing thematic inspiration from maritime lore, especially Herman Melville’s iconic tale of Captain Ahab’s obsessive hunt, the band has consistently woven oceanic narratives into their music.

Their breakthrough came with the 2006 album "The Call of the Wretched Sea," released under Napalm Records, which established them as heirs to funeral doom legends like Skepticism and Esoteric. Ahab’s follow-up, "The Divinity of Oceans" (2009), delved into the tragic whaleship Essex disaster, further cementing their niche in conceptual doom metal. The 2012 album "The Giant" marked a stylistic evolution, introducing progressive rock, jazz, ambient elements, and guest clean vocals by Herbrand Larsen of Enslaved, showcasing their willingness to experiment beyond traditional doom boundaries.

Continuing their maritime literary explorations, 2015’s "The Boats of Glen Carrig," inspired by William Hope Hodgson’s horror novel, balanced crushing heaviness with melodic and atmospheric depth. Extensive global tours and festival appearances expanded their international fanbase. Capturing the raw intensity of their live performances, the 2020 live release "Live Prey" highlighted Ahab’s enduring evolution. Through their unique fusion of nautical myth, funeral doom intensity, and atmospheric innovation, Ahab remains a seminal force in contemporary doom metal.
