About Mastodon

Mastodon, formed in Atlanta in 1999, stands as one of the most innovative and influential American metal bands of the 21st century. Comprising guitarists Bill Kelliher and Brent Hinds, bassist and vocalist Troy Sanders, and drummer Brann Dailor, the band has forged a signature sound that blends sludge, stoner, progressive, and alternative metal with elements of hardcore, metalcore, neo-psychedelia, and death metal. Their music is distinguished by technically intricate guitar riffs, melodic passages, and complex, jazz-influenced rhythms.

Mastodon's commercial breakthrough came with the critically acclaimed 2004 album "Leviathan," a concept record inspired by Herman Melville’s *Moby Dick*. This landmark release cemented their status in the metal community and propelled them to a major label deal with Warner Bros. Records. Subsequent albums such as "Blood Mountain" (2006) and the progressive "Crack the Skye" (2009) reinforced their reputation, earning Grammy nominations and chart success. The 2011 release "The Hunter" saw the band explore a more accessible, progressive sound with notable Billboard chart performance.

In 2017, Mastodon released the Grammy-winning album "Emperor of Sand," inspired by personal battles with cancer, featuring the award-winning track "Sultan’s Curse." Continuing their creative evolution, the band unveiled the expansive double album "Hushed and Grim" in 2021, incorporating death and sludge metal with psychedelic and punk influences. In 2024, Mastodon teamed up with Lamb of God on the dynamic single "Floods of Triton," marking two decades since "Leviathan" and reaffirming their legacy as one of metal’s most persistently evolving forces. Known for inventive compositions and electrifying live performances, Mastodon remains a cornerstone of modern metal music.
