About WITCH

WITCH (We Intend to Cause Havoc) is a seminal Zambian psychedelic rock band that emerged in the early 1970s as a cornerstone of the Zamrock movement. Formed amidst Zambia’s fresh post-independence cultural landscape, WITCH skillfully fused Western rock, rhythm & blues, and psychedelic influences—from icons like the Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, and the Rolling Stones—with indigenous African rhythms. Their unique sound helped shape Zambia’s musical identity during a transformative era.

The original lineup featured the charismatic vocalist Emanyeo "Jagari" Chanda, celebrated for his Mick Jagger-inspired stage presence, alongside guitarists Chris Mbewe and John Muma, bassist Gedeon Mulenga, and drummer Boidi Sinkala. These musicians brought experience from Zambia’s late-1960s cover band scene into their groundbreaking original compositions. Their 1972 debut album, "Introduction," was among the first commercially released albums by a Zambian band. This was followed by the critically acclaimed "Lazy Bones!!" (1975), widely regarded as their defining work despite the era’s rudimentary recording conditions.

As Zambia’s mining economy waned in the mid-1970s, WITCH explored darker and more experimental sounds, drawing on influences like Deep Purple and Grand Funk Railroad. After opening for the UK Afro-rock band Osibisa and releasing "Lukombo Vibes," internal shifts led to Chanda’s departure in 1977. Subsequent iterations of the band gradually embraced disco elements before disbanding by the mid-1980s.

Rediscovered globally following reissues by labels such as Now-Again Records, WITCH reunited in 2012, reigniting interest in their pioneering legacy. In 2023, they released "Zango," their first new album in nearly four decades, featuring collaborations with modern Zambian artists like Sampa the Great and Theresa Ng’ambi. This revival cements WITCH’s enduring influence on African rock and their vital role in the continent’s musical history.
