About Calema

Calema is a dynamic musical duo from São Tomé and Príncipe, formed by brothers Fradique and António Mendes Ferreira, born in 1987 and 1992 respectively. Fradique hails from Roça Ribeira-Peixe in the southern region, while António was born in the capital city of São Tomé. Their unique sound is deeply influenced by their rich multicultural heritage, blending roots from Cape Verdean, Portuguese, and Angolar communities. Growing up in São João dos Angolares, they cultivated their musical talents early on by singing in the choir of Santa Cruz dos Angolares Church, which laid the foundation for their harmonious vocals.

In 2009, the brothers adopted the name Calema, inspired by a distinctive wave phenomenon along the African coast that symbolizes the arrival of new, meaningful experiences—mirroring their music's warmth and emotional depth. Their breakthrough came after winning the Lusartist competition, paving the way for their debut album, "Bomu Kêlê" (2012), meaning "Let's Believe" in Creole. This album features original songs in both Creole and Portuguese, showcasing their songwriting skills and powerful, crystalline voices.

Known for their humble yet magnetic stage presence, Calema captivates audiences with melodies that celebrate cultural pride, faith, and resilience. Their engaging fusion of Afro-Portuguese rhythms and heartfelt lyrics continues to resonate across the Lusophone music scene, earning them the affectionate title "the Calema angels." Through relentless dedication, Calema remains a beacon of vibrant, soulful music from São Tomé and Príncipe.
