About Jay Chou

Jay Chou, born Chou Chieh-lun in 1979 in Linkou, Taiwan, is a pioneering force in Mandopop whose innovative sound has reshaped Asian pop music since his debut album "Jay" (2000). Beginning piano lessons at age four and learning cello in elementary school, Jay’s classical training laid a unique foundation that he blended with hip-hop, R&B, and traditional Chinese folk elements. This genre fusion quickly distinguished his music, propelling albums like "Fantasy" (2001), "Common Jasmine Orange" (2004), and "Jay Chou’s Bedtime Stories" (2016) to widespread acclaim and massive sales across East Asia.

Jay’s rise to stardom began following a 1998 appearance on "Super New Talent King," which led to a composer contract with Alfa Music. Beyond his musical achievements, he founded the influential JVR Music label, releasing hits such as "On the Run" (2007), "Capricorn" (2008), and "Opus 12" (2012). Jay also expanded into acting and directing, starring in films including "Initial D" (2005), "Curse of the Golden Flower" (2006), Hollywood’s "The Green Hornet" (2011), and directing the critically acclaimed, music-centered drama "Secret" (2007).

Continuing to evolve, Jay Chou returned from a brief hiatus with the 2022 album "Greatest Works of Art," featuring collaborations with stars like pianist Lang Lang and Mayday’s Ashin on the track "Won’t Cry." With tens of millions of albums sold and a lasting influence on contemporary Asian entertainment, Jay Chou remains a cultural icon—constantly redefining Mandopop with his artistry and versatility.
