About Air

Air, the iconic French electronic duo formed by Nicolas Godin and Jean-Benoît Dunckel, emerged from Versailles in the late 1990s with a distinctive, atmospheric sound that set them apart from the era's dancefloor-driven electronic acts. Meeting during their college years and initially collaborating in the alternative band Orange, they combined influences ranging from Burt Bacharach and Brian Wilson to Vangelis and obscure Italian film scores. This eclectic mix laid the foundation for their groundbreaking debut album, "Moon Safari" (1998). Recorded partly at Abbey Road Studios, the album blended lush synthesizers with cinematic textures, propelling hits like "Sexy Boy" and "Kelly Watch the Stars" to platinum status across Europe and securing Air’s reputation as pioneers of downtempo electronica.

Following the success of "Moon Safari," Air continued to evolve artistically through albums such as "10,000 Hz Legend" (2001), which introduced darker, prog-rock-inspired soundscapes, and the more accessible "Talkie Walkie" (2004), co-produced by Nigel Godrich. Their 2007 release, "Pocket Symphony," incorporated traditional Japanese instruments, showcasing their penchant for experimentation. Beyond studio albums, Air gained acclaim for their evocative film scores, notably for Sofia Coppola’s "The Virgin Suicides" (2000) and the restored silent film "Le Voyage Dans La Lune" (2012), earning critical praise and award nominations.

Throughout their enduring career, Godin and Dunckel have balanced emotive melodies with innovative electronic textures, influencing generations while maintaining artistic integrity. Their work continues to be celebrated through deluxe reissues and international tours, cementing Air’s legacy as one of electronic music’s most imaginative and enduring acts.
