About Billy Bragg

Billy Bragg emerged in the late 1970s as a distinctive voice merging punk rock’s rebellious energy with the socially conscious folk traditions of legends like Woody Guthrie and Bob Dylan. Beginning his musical journey with the brief punk band Riff Raff and a short stint in the British Army, he soon found his unique sound performing solo with just an electric guitar. His breakthrough came with the politically charged EP "Life's a Riot with Spy vs. Spy" (1983), which gained traction on the UK independent charts, followed by his debut album "Brewing Up with Billy Bragg" (1984).

Throughout the 1980s, Bragg became a central figure in the British anti-folk scene, known for witty, warm storytelling mixed with sharp political commentary. His activism extended beyond music as he co-founded the socialist collective Red Wedge alongside Paul Weller, frequently appearing at rallies and benefit concerts. His 1986 album "Talking with the Taxman About Poetry" cracked the UK Top Ten, while his 1988 Beatles cover of "She’s Leaving Home," paired with Wet Wet Wet's single, reached number one.

Evolving his sound, Bragg collaborated with producer Joe Boyd on "Workers Playtime" (1988) and embraced a fuller band setup on "Don’t Try This at Home" (1991), which featured the hit "Sexuality." After a brief hiatus focusing on fatherhood, he returned with "William Bloke" (1996) and the acclaimed "Mermaid Avenue" projects (1998, 2000) in collaboration with American band Wilco, setting previously unreleased Woody Guthrie lyrics to music.

Continuing to blend folk roots with contemporary themes, Bragg formed the Blokes for albums like "England, Half English" (2002) and "Mr. Love & Justice" (2008). In the 2010s, he honored Guthrie’s legacy with "Tooth & Nail" (2013) and explored American folk traditions on the railroad-inspired "Shine a Light: Field Recordings from the Great American Railroad" (2016), recorded aboard an Amtrak journey. His politically charged EP "Bridges Not Walls" (2017) underscores Billy Bragg’s enduring commitment to activism and socially engaged songwriting, cementing his place as a seminal figure in British music history.
