About Peter Hammill

Peter Hammill, born in 1948 in Ealing, West London, is a seminal figure in progressive rock and art rock, renowned as the co-founder and creative driving force behind Van Der Graaf Generator as well as for his expansive solo career. Moving to Derby at age 12, Hammill’s early life was shaped by Catholic Jesuit education and a deep engagement with history, philosophy, and depth psychology—elements that would profoundly influence his introspective and complex lyricism. His musical foundation began in childhood with piano, later expanding to guitar and an eclectic mix of genres including classical, opera, avant-garde, and rock.

While studying at Manchester University, Hammill formed Van Der Graaf Generator alongside Nick Peame and Chris Judge Smith, with the lineup eventually featuring Hugh Banton, Guy Evans, and David Jackson. Between 1969 and 1971, the band released influential albums such as "The Aerosol Grey Machine" (1969), "H to He, Who Am the Only One" (1970), and "Pawn Hearts" (1971), which firmly established their reputation in the progressive rock scene. Following the band’s first split in 1972, Hammill launched his solo career with "Fool's Mate" (1971), earning acclaim for his distinctive vocal intensity and fearless musical experimentation on records like "Nadir's Big Chance" (1975) and "Over" (1977).

Van Der Graaf Generator reunited mid-1970s and continued sporadic collaborations, producing notable albums including "Godbluff" (1975), "Present" (2005), and "Trisector" (2008). In 1992, Hammill founded his own label, Fie! Records, debuting with the critically lauded "Fireships" (1992). His diverse collaborative ventures—spanning opera projects like "The Fall of the House of Usher" (1991) and work with artists such as Gary Lucas—highlight his versatility. Still actively recording well into the 21st century with albums like "Incoherence" (2006) and "From the Trees" (2017), Peter Hammill remains an innovative pillar of progressive music, continuously challenging and inspiring audiences worldwide.
