About Days of the New

Days of the New emerged in the mid-1990s from Charlestown, Indiana, as a distinctive post-grunge band led by singer, guitarist, and songwriter Travis Meeks. Alongside bassist Jesse Vest, drummer Matt Taul, and guitarist Todd Whitener, the band relocated to Louisville, Kentucky, where they crafted an acoustic-driven sound marked by moody, introspective lyrics. Their music drew frequent comparisons to Alice in Chains’ intimate unplugged sessions and echoed the vocal stylings of Jim Morrison, carving out a niche in the alternative rock landscape of the era.

Their self-titled debut album (1997), produced by former R.E.M. collaborator Scott Litt, delivered a string of hits that resonated with MTV audiences, including the standout singles "Touch, Peel and Stand" and "The Down Town." This album propelled Days of the New to commercial success, earning them a coveted spot opening for Metallica’s 1998 summer tour. However, escalating internal tensions during this tour led to significant lineup upheavals, with Meeks dismissing most members and continuing the band primarily as his solo project.

Days of the New’s subsequent self-titled albums in 1999 and 2001 reflected Meeks’ evolving artistic vision. The second album incorporated ambitious orchestral arrangements, while the third embraced progressive rock influences. Though these later works did not replicate the debut’s commercial impact, they underscored Meeks’ commitment to innovation within the post-grunge genre. Notably, Meeks also collaborated with surviving members of The Doors in 2000, covering "The End" for VH1’s Storytellers and a tribute album. Throughout their journey, Days of the New remain defined by their poetic lyrics and signature acoustic sound, securing a lasting legacy in 1990s alternative rock history.
