About Bauhaus

Bauhaus, formed in 1978 in Northampton, England, are pioneers of gothic rock, blending minimalist yet dark post-punk with jagged guitars and haunting synthesizers. The original lineup included Peter Murphy (vocals), Daniel Ash (guitar and vocals), David J (bass and vocals), and Kevin Haskins (drums). Initially named Bauhaus 1919 after the German art movement, they shortened it to Bauhaus by 1979. Their groundbreaking debut single, "Bela Lugosi’s Dead" (1979), released on Small Wonder Records, became a definitive goth anthem despite not charting commercially.

Signing with influential labels like 4AD and Beggars Banquet, Bauhaus released key singles such as "Dark Entries" and their highest-charting single, a cover of David Bowie’s "Ziggy Stardust," which reached number 15 on UK charts. Their four studio albums during their initial run— "In the Flat Field" (1980), "Mask" (1981), "The Sky’s Gone Out" (1982), and "Burning from the Inside" (1983)—highlighted their evolving sound. These records fused post-punk with glam, electronic, funk, and metal influences, achieving critical acclaim and indie chart success.

After disbanding in 1983 due to illness-related delays and creative differences, members pursued side projects like Love and Rockets and solo careers. Bauhaus reunited for live shows in the late 1990s and released the studio album "Go Away White" (2008). Their enduring legacy cements Bauhaus as a seminal force shaping gothic and alternative music for decades.
