About Jorge Drexler

Jorge Drexler, born on September 21, 1964, in Montevideo, Uruguay, is a pioneering singer-songwriter celebrated for blending traditional Uruguayan genres like candombe, murga, milonga, and tango with modern influences including samba, bossa nova, jazz, and electronic music. Originating from a Jewish family with roots fleeing German persecution, he initially pursued a career in medicine, becoming an otolaryngologist before fully dedicating himself to music.

Drexler’s early albums, such as "La Luz Que Sabe Robar" (1992) and "Radar" (1994), marked the beginning of his artistic journey. His move to Madrid in 1995, invited by renowned songwriter Joaquín Sabina, was a turning point that launched his international career and secured a contract with Virgin España. He rose to global fame with his 2004 album "Eco," featuring the Oscar-winning track "Al Otro Lado del Río," the first Academy Award for a Uruguayan artist, showcased in the film *The Motorcycle Diaries*.

Continuing to evolve, Drexler released critically acclaimed albums like "12 Segundos de Oscuridad" (2006) and "Bailar en la Cueva" (2014), the latter blending dance and EDM influences and featuring collaborations with Caetano Veloso, Ana Tijoux, and Bomba Estéreo. His 2017 record, "Salvavidas de Hielo," highlighted his fascination with acoustic guitar and craftsmanship, earning multiple Grammy and Latin Grammy nominations. After a brief hiatus, Drexler returned in 2022 with "Tinta y Tiempo," collaborating with artists such as Rubén Blades, Noga Erez, and Martín Buscaglia, reaffirming his status as a boundary-breaking figure in Latin music who honors his cultural heritage while continuously innovating.
