About Diplo

Diplo, born Thomas Wesley Pentz in Tupelo, Mississippi, is a trailblazing DJ, producer, and record label founder whose innovative approach has reshaped modern electronic and dance music. Raised mainly in South Florida, he initially pursued film studies at Temple University in Philadelphia, where financial challenges led him to co-create the influential Hollertronix club nights with DJ Low Budget. This East Coast electro-pop scene incubator garnered acclaim with mixtapes like "Never Scared," earning recognition from The New York Times in 2003.

Diplo’s breakout moment came with his 2004 mixtape "Piracy Funds Terrorism, Vol. 1," which helped catapult British-Sri Lankan artist M.I.A. into the global spotlight. That same year, his solo debut, "Florida," displayed a more melodic, downtempo sound, contrasting with his earlier high-energy mashups. Around this time, he founded Mad Decent Records, a platform that launched diverse acts including Brazilian baile funk group Bondo do Role.

Expanding his creative horizons, Diplo co-founded Major Lazer with DJ Switch, a genre-defying project blending dancehall rhythms with electronic rave culture. Albums like "Guns Don’t Kill People... Lazers Do" (2009) and "Peace Is the Mission" (2015) established Major Lazer as a global sensation. His collaborative ventures also include Jack Ü with Skrillex, earning a Grammy for the hit "Where Are Ü Now" featuring Justin Bieber, and Silk City with Mark Ronson, whose Grammy-winning "Electricity" features Dua Lipa.

Known for his genre versatility, Diplo has produced for icons such as Madonna and Usher, while exploring trap and even country music under the alias Thomas Wesley, culminating in the 2020 album "Chapter 1: Snake Oil." Throughout his career, Diplo’s fearless blend of sounds and commitment to innovation have cemented his status as one of the most influential figures in contemporary music.
