About Erykah Badu

Erykah Badu, born Erica Wright in Dallas in 1971, emerged as a pioneering force in neo-soul and contemporary R&B with her 1997 debut album, "Baduizm." Raised with deep influences from ’70s soul and ’80s hip-hop, Badu’s distinctive vocal style and personal songwriting quickly set her apart. After opening for D’Angelo in 1994, she caught the eye of his manager, Kedar Massenburg, who signed her to Kedar Entertainment and helped bring "Baduizm" to life. The album—featuring her breakout single "On & On"—reached number two on the Billboard charts and topped R&B rankings, earning critical acclaim for its lush bass grooves and Billie Holiday-like phrasing.

Badu continued to shape the soundscape of alternative R&B with subsequent albums like "Mama’s Gun" (2000), highlighted by the hit "Bag Lady," and the experimental "Worldwide Underground" (2003). Her politically charged "New Amerykah" series, released between 2008 and 2010, showcased further artistic evolution, blending abstract sounds with collaborations from artists such as Sa-Ra and Georgia Anne Muldrow. Badu’s creative versatility extends to collaborations with Flying Lotus, Robert Glasper, Tyler, The Creator, and Bonobo. In 2015, she released the innovative mixtape "But You Caint Use My Phone," reinforcing her legacy as a boundary-pushing icon in the music world whose influence continues to resonate.
