About Salif Keita

Salif Keita, often hailed as the "Golden Voice of Africa," is one of Mali’s most iconic and influential musicians. Born in 1949 into a royal lineage descending from Soundjata Keita, founder of the Malian Empire, Salif faced early challenges due to his albinism, including social rejection and family estrangement. Undeterred, he pursued his passion for music, moving to Bamako in 1967 where he began as a street performer. By 1969, his soaring vocals secured him a place in the renowned Rail Band, a pivotal government-sponsored ensemble that helped shape modern Malian music.

In 1973, Keita co-founded Les Ambassadeurs Internationaux in Abidjan, blending Cuban, Zairean, and Malian rhythms to international acclaim. Relocating to Paris in 1984, he launched a solo career with the groundbreaking album "Soro" (1987), which fused traditional African melodies with jazz, funk, and European pop influences. His follow-up, "Amen" (1990), earned a Grammy nomination and featured collaborations with legends such as Joe Zawinul and Carlos Santana. Subsequent albums like "Moffou" (2002) and "M’Bemba" (2006) further cemented his reputation for bridging Western and West African sounds.

Keita’s later works, including the acoustic-driven "La Différence" (2010), winner of France’s Victoires de la Musique award, and the dance-infused "Talé" (2012), produced by Philippe Cohen Solal of Gotan Project, showcased his versatility. Announcing his retirement after releasing "Un Autre Blanc" (2018), Salif Keita leaves behind a rich legacy as a trailblazer who brought Malian music to the global stage.
