About Marty Friedman

Marty Friedman, born in 1962 near Baltimore, is widely regarded as one of the most technically gifted guitarists in heavy metal history. He began his musical journey at age 15, initially playing in the band Deuce before relocating to Hawaii. There, Friedman immersed himself in diverse musical traditions, especially Asian and Middle Eastern scales, which would profoundly shape his distinctive style. His breakthrough came in 1987 with the formation of the instrumental duo Cacophony alongside Jason Becker. Their debut album, "Speed Metal Symphony" (1987), showcased blistering twin-guitar work and secured both musicians’ reputations in the shred guitar community.

After Cacophony released "Go Off!" (1989), Friedman joined Megadeth in late 1990, marking a pivotal chapter in his career. His debut with the band on the critically acclaimed "Rust in Peace" (1990) is considered a thrash metal masterpiece, while "Countdown to Extinction" (1992) propelled Megadeth to mainstream success. During his decade-long tenure, Friedman balanced his metal career with experimental projects, collaborating with new age artist Kitaro on the contemplative "Scenes" (1992) and exploring Japanese influences on solo albums like "Introduction" (1994) and "True Obsession" (1996).

Since leaving Megadeth in 2000, Marty Friedman has continued to evolve, releasing genre-crossing albums such as "Music for Speeding" (2003), "Tokyo Jukebox" (2009, 2011), "Inferno" (2014), and "Wall of Sound" (2017). His innovative fusion of shred guitar with Eastern musical elements solidifies his status as a revered figure not only in metal but also in instrumental music worldwide.
