About Television

Emerging from New York City’s vibrant mid-1970s punk scene, Television became one of the most innovative and influential bands of their era. Originally formed as the Neon Boys in the early 1970s by guitarist and vocalist Tom Verlaine, drummer Billy Ficca, and bassist Richard Hell, the group evolved into Television by late 1973 with the addition of rhythm guitarist Richard Lloyd. This quartet pioneered a groundbreaking guitar style that fused the raw energy of garage rock with jazz-influenced, lyrical solos and angular rhythms, reshaping the soundscape of punk and post-punk music.

Television played a key role in establishing CBGB as the epicenter of New York’s emerging punk movement, with Verlaine’s efforts securing regular live performances at the club. Their acclaimed debut album, "Marquee Moon" (1977), gained critical praise and commercial success in the UK, reaching number 28 and producing the Top 40 single "Prove It." The follow-up, "Adventure" (1978), further solidified their British popularity by reaching the Top Ten, though internal tensions led to their disbandment soon after.

Throughout the years, Television reunited multiple times, including a notable 1991 comeback with a self-titled album under Capitol Records and memorable festival appearances such as Glastonbury. Despite lineup changes—most notably Richard Lloyd’s amicable departure in 2007—the band continued to perform sporadically until Tom Verlaine’s passing in January 2023. Television’s legacy endures through their revolutionary guitar interplay and profound influence on the evolution of punk, post-punk, and art rock genres.
