About Seckou Keita

Seckou Keita, born in 1978 in Senegal’s Ziguinchor region, is widely regarded as a virtuoso Kora player and a pioneering voice in African traditional music. Rooted in the esteemed griot heritage, Keita has earned the nickname "the Hendrix of the Kora" for his innovative technique and electrifying performances that push the boundaries of the West African harp. Over his career, he has released 14 critically acclaimed albums, amassing over 25 million streams on Spotify and multiple BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards, underscoring his international acclaim.

Keita’s music elegantly bridges tradition and modernity, blending the rich sounds of the Kora with diverse genres including urban, hip-hop, and pop influences. His 2023 album, "Homeland" (Hudson Records), showcases this bold fusion. Marking a significant evolution in his artistry, Keita returns to performing standing up—honoring a family legacy inspired by his late uncle and mentor, Solo Cissokho—while leading an energetic six-piece band of Senegalese musicians. This approach highlights both his deep respect for heritage and his role as a charismatic bandleader.

Seckou Keita’s ability to reinvent the Kora’s voice and collaborate across genres has solidified his reputation as one of Africa’s most forward-thinking and influential musicians, making a lasting impact on the global world music stage.
