Huey Lewis and the News, formed in 1979 in the San Francisco Bay Area, emerged from members of the bands Soundhole and Clover—the latter known for backing Elvis Costello on his debut album "My Aim Is True." Carving out a distinctive niche during the vibrant 1980s music scene, the band combined classic rhythm and blues roots with a punchy, pop-driven sound that resonated widely. Their approachable, everyman image set them apart from the era’s theatrical pop icons, a charm they reinforced with casual, bar-themed album art, most famously on their septuple-platinum breakthrough, "Sports" (1983).

Signed to Chrysalis Records, Huey Lewis and the News delivered a string of memorable hits like "I Want a New Drug," "The Heart of Rock and Roll," and "Heart and Soul," blending timeless musicianship with contemporary flair. Their commercial peak arrived mid-decade with chart-toppers such as "The Power of Love," featured on the iconic *Back to the Future* soundtrack, and "Hip to Be Square," which later gained cultural prominence through its use in *American Psycho*. Huey Lewis, known for his charismatic vocals and harmonica prowess, helped keep the band’s sound fresh and relatable.
