About Martha Argerich

Martha Argerich, born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, is widely regarded as one of the most extraordinary pianists of her generation. Showing prodigious talent from the age of five under the tutelage of Vincenzo Scaramuzza, she quickly captivated audiences with her remarkable skill. In 1955, Argerich relocated to Europe to deepen her musical education, studying with eminent teachers such as Bruno Seidlhofer, Friedrich Gulda, Nikita Magaloff, Madeleine Lipatti, and Stefan Askenase across London, Vienna, and Switzerland.

Her international breakthrough came with victories at the Bolzano and Geneva Piano Competitions in 1957, followed by a defining triumph at the Warsaw International Chopin Competition in 1965. These accomplishments firmly established her as a leading virtuoso on the global classical music stage.

Argerich’s repertoire is notable for its breadth and intensity, spanning from Baroque masters like Bach to Romantic giants such as Chopin, Liszt, and Schumann, as well as 20th-century composers including Ravel, Prokofiev, Shostakovich, Bartók, and Messiaen. While she frequently performs with top orchestras and conductors worldwide, chamber music remains a vital part of her artistic life. Collaborations with distinguished musicians—Nelson Freire, Ivry Gitlis, Mischa Maisky, Gidon Kremer, and Daniel Barenboim—highlight her preference for intimate musical dialogues that provide her with deep connection and artistic fulfillment.
