About Gretchen Wilson

Gretchen Wilson, born June 26, 1973, in Pocahontas, Illinois, rose from humble beginnings to become a defining voice in country music. Raised by a teenage mother after her father left when she was two, Wilson grew up in trailer parks and left school after eighth grade to work as a cook and bartender. Her journey to stardom began in Nashville, where she moved in 1996 and spent years performing in local venues while bartending. A key turning point was her involvement with the Muzik Mafia, a Nashville collective of songwriters and performers, where she co-wrote the autobiographical breakthrough hit "Redneck Woman" with John Rich.

Released in 2004, "Redneck Woman" catapulted Wilson to fame as the first solo female single to top Billboard’s country singles chart in over two years, setting a record for the fastest climb to number one in a decade. Her debut album, *Here for the Party* (2004), sold an astounding 227,000 copies in its first week, debuting at number one on the country chart and number two on the pop chart—an unprecedented feat for a new country artist. Wilson’s music stood out for its raw, unapologetic celebration of working-class, rural life, striking a chord amid the rising pop influences in country music.

Wilson continued to build on her success with albums like *All Jacked Up* (2005), *One of the Boys* (2007), and independent releases on her own Redneck Records label, including *Right on Time* (2013) and *Ready to Get Rowdy* (2017). Her career, marked by authenticity and a commitment to traditional country sounds, earned her Grammy recognition and cemented her status as one of the genre’s enduring artists.
