About Richard Thompson

Richard Thompson, born on April 3, 1949, in Notting Hill, London, is a seminal figure in British folk-rock, renowned for his virtuosic guitar playing, evocative songwriting, and distinctive vocals. Influenced early on by jazz icons like Django Reinhardt and Charlie Christian, as well as traditional Scottish music, Thompson helped shape a unique sound that fused authentic folk traditions with rock energy.

As a founding member of Fairport Convention in 1967, he played a pivotal role in revolutionizing British folk-rock. The band’s landmark 1969 album, "Liege and Lief," is credited with revitalizing interest in traditional UK folk music, featuring classics such as "Meet on the Ledge." After his departure from Fairport in 1971, Thompson’s collaboration with his then-wife Linda Thompson produced acclaimed albums like "I Want to See the Bright Lights Tonight" (1974) and the emotionally charged "Shoot Out the Lights" (1982).

Launching a solo career in the 1980s, Thompson released "Hand of Kindness" (1983) and gained widespread recognition with "Rumor and Sigh" (1991), home to the now-classic "1952 Vincent Black Lightning," which has become a staple in folk and bluegrass repertoires. Throughout the decades, Thompson continued to evolve, releasing critically praised albums such as "Amnesia" (1988), "Mirror Blue" (1994), and "Mock Tudor" (1999). His later works, including "The Old Kit Bag" (2003), "Electric" (2013), and "13 Rivers" (2018), reflect his enduring artistry and adaptability.

Collaborating with producers like Mitchell Froom and Jeff Tweedy, Richard Thompson’s influence spans across folk, rock, and bluegrass, solidifying his legacy as one of the most innovative and revered musicians in modern British music history.
