About Vashti Bunyan

Vashti Bunyan, born in South Tyneside in 1945, is a seminal English folk singer-songwriter known for her ethereal voice and pioneering role in the acid folk genre. Her musical journey began while studying at the Ruskin School of Art, where her passion for songwriting led to her expulsion for prioritizing music over painting. Inspired profoundly by Bob Dylan’s early work during a trip to New York, Bunyan returned to London determined to pursue a career in music.

She initially attracted the attention of Rolling Stones manager Andrew Loog Oldham, who signed her to Decca Records. There, she released singles like "Some Things Just Stick in Your Mind" (written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards) and "Train Song" (1966), though these early efforts went largely unnoticed commercially. After a period of nomadic travel, including a two-year horse-drawn wagon journey through the Hebrides, Bunyan recorded her acclaimed debut album, "Just Another Diamond Day" (1970). Produced by Joe Boyd and featuring contributions from members of Fairport Convention and the Incredible String Band, the album’s delicate, pastoral sound was initially overlooked but later became a cult classic following a widely praised reissue in 2000.

Following decades focused on family and relative musical silence, Vashti Bunyan returned to the spotlight with "Lookaftering" (2005) and her self-produced final album "Heartleap" (2014). Her influence spans generations of folk musicians and enthusiasts. In 2022, she further enriched her legacy with the publication of her memoir, "Wayward: Just Another Life to Live," providing an intimate portrait of her unique artistic life.
