About Siouxsie and the Banshees

Siouxsie and the Banshees emerged from London’s vibrant punk scene in 1976, founded by the charismatic vocalist Siouxsie Sioux (born Susan Dallion) and bassist Steven Severin. Originating as part of the influential Bromley Contingent, the band made a memorable debut at the legendary 100 Club Punk Festival with a strikingly unconventional performance. Their breakthrough came in 1978 with the single "Hong Kong Garden," which cracked the UK Top Ten and set the stage for their haunting debut album "The Scream" (1978).

Over the next two decades, Siouxsie and the Banshees evolved from raw, abrasive art punk into a refined and atmospheric force that blended gothic, psychedelic, and electronic elements. Albums like "Kaleidoscope" (1980), featuring the Top 20 hit "Happy House," and the psychedelic "Juju" (1981) marked their artistic growth. Despite numerous lineup changes—including contributions from Robert Smith of The Cure and guitarist John McGeoch—the band maintained a distinct and evolving sound.

In 1991, they reached their peak commercial success with "Superstition," which included their only US Top 40 single, "Kiss Them for Me," coinciding with their appearance on the inaugural Lollapalooza tour. Across their career, Siouxsie and the Banshees amassed 18 UK Top 40 hits and released their final studio album, "The Rapture" (1995), before disbanding in 1996. Beyond the band, Sioux and drummer Budgie explored side projects like the Creatures, while Severin delved into film scoring. Their legacy endures as pioneers who shaped post-punk and alternative music for generations to come.
