About Changing Modes

Changing Modes is a New York City-based art-rock ensemble celebrated for its dynamic fusion of punk energy, new wave aesthetics, pop sensibility, and classical sophistication. Founded in the mid-1990s as a home recording project by songwriter Wendy Griffiths and multi-instrumentalist Yuzuru Sadashige, the group evolved into a full live band by 2000. That year, they released their self-titled EP, followed by a second EP in 2001. Their debut full-length album, "A Perfect Day" (2003), established their reputation for genre-blending and innovation.

A key transition occurred in 2004 when drummer Jon Mele departed for Ireland, making way for David Oromaner, known for collaborations with artists like Marianne Pillsbury. Oromaner’s first appearance on "Aeroplane" (2005) added new textures to their sound. In 2006, the band expanded its theatrical and sonic dimensions by bringing in Camille Atkinson, a cabaret and LGBTQ/fetish club performer, as lead vocalist. This lineup shift propelled Changing Modes into richer, more experimental territory.

Over the ensuing years, they released a series of critically acclaimed albums, including "Down and Out in Shangri-La" (2008), "Here" (2010), "In Flight" (2012), "The Paradox of Traveling Light" (2014), and "Goodbye Theodora" (2017). Their evolving lineup, later featuring Grace Pulliam, Timur Yusef, and baritone saxophonist Sawa Tamezane, solidified their standing as innovators within the art-rock and experimental scenes. Changing Modes remains a compelling force, continuously redefining the boundaries of modern alternative music.
