About Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes

Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes, born on May 27, 1971, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, was a dynamic singer and rapper best known as the bold and charismatic force behind the groundbreaking R&B trio TLC. After moving to Atlanta in 1990, she co-founded TLC, helping launch the group’s rise to fame with their 1992 debut album, "Ooooooohhh.... On the TLC Tip," which featured a fresh blend of new jack swing and hip-hop with hits like "Ain't 2 Proud 2 Beg." Lopes’ distinctive style—highlighted by her signature condom-adorned eyewear, vibrant tattoos, and colorful fashion—made her the group’s most flamboyant personality.

TLC’s second album, "CrazySexyCool" (1994), marked a major breakthrough, blending smooth contemporary R&B and earning multi-platinum success alongside iconic singles such as "Creep" and "Waterfalls." This album earned the group multiple Grammy and MTV Video Music Awards, cementing their influence in the music industry. Their third album, "FanMail" (1999), sustained their momentum with chart-toppers like "No Scrubs" and "Unpretty."

While navigating internal tensions within TLC, Lisa Lopez pursued a solo career, releasing the album "Supernova" (2001) internationally, though it remained unreleased in the U.S. Tragically, her promising life and career were cut short when she died in a car accident in Honduras in 2002 at the age of 30. Her posthumous releases, including TLC’s "3D" (2002) and her solo compilation "Eye Legacy" (2009), continue to celebrate her enduring impact on R&B and hip-hop culture.
