About BADBADNOTGOOD

Toronto-based ensemble BADBADNOTGOOD has redefined contemporary jazz through a bold fusion of ’70s soul-jazz, alternative hip-hop, and experimental electronica. Formed in 2010 at Humber College by keyboardist Matthew Tavares, bassist Chester Hansen, and drummer Alexander Sowinski, the group first captured attention with inventive jazz interpretations of tracks by Odd Future and MF Doom, earning early praise from Tyler, The Creator. Their debut album, "BBNG" (2011), recorded in just a three-hour session, featured covers of hip-hop and indie artists like A Tribe Called Quest and Waka Flocka Flame, firmly establishing their genre-defying reputation.

Building on this momentum, their sophomore release, "BBNG2" (2012), expanded their range with reinterpretations of Kanye West, My Bloody Valentine, and James Blake, blending jazz with diverse influences. Their instrumental breakthrough came with "III" (2014), which topped Billboard’s Contemporary Jazz Albums chart and garnered a Polaris Music Prize nomination. The addition of saxophonist Leland Whitty in 2016 propelled their sound further, leading to "IV" (2016), an album featuring collaborations with Samuel T. Herring and Kaytranada that marked their debut on the Canadian charts.

BADBADNOTGOOD’s collaborative spirit shines through projects like the 2015 "Sour Soul" with Ghostface Killah and the 2021 album "Talk Memory," which incorporated orchestral arrangements by Arthur Verocai and contributions from Brandee Younger. In 2024, they released "Mid Spiral," a collection born from an intensive weeklong recording session that continued to push jazz boundaries. Their Grammy-nominated remix of “Alien Love Call” with hardcore band Turnstile further highlights their innovative fusion of jazz with contemporary genres. BADBADNOTGOOD remains a pioneering force, inspiring a new generation of jazz and hip-hop artists alike.
