About John Turville

John Turville stands out as one of the preeminent jazz pianists of his generation, celebrated for his virtuosity and innovative compositions. Throughout his career, he has released three leader albums, notably collaborating with acclaimed saxophonist Julian Arguelles. These projects have earned prestigious accolades, including MOJO’s #3 Jazz Album of the Year, the 2011 Parliamentary Awards’ Best Album, the 2009 PRS Promoter’s Choice Award, and the 2010 London Jazz Awards’ Best Instrumentalist title.

Beyond his solo achievements, Turville is a highly sought-after collaborator, contributing to over thirty recordings with distinguished jazz and tango artists such as Tim Garland, the Yuri Goloubev Trio, Alan Barnes, and the London Tango Orchestra. Deeply embedded in the vibrant E17 jazz scene, he co-founded the E17 jazz collective and festival, where he leads dynamic ensembles like the 13-piece E17 Large Ensemble, the tango-infused Almagro Ensemble quintet, and the sextet Solstice. Solstice’s debut album, "Alimentation" (2017), was supported by a 20-date Arts Council tour, with a follow-up anticipated shortly thereafter.

Turville’s compositional range extends to strings, vocal arrangements, and tango groups, including a significant commission for contemporary tango dancer Richard Manuel. As an educator, he shapes emerging talent as a visiting principal tutor at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, the Purcell School, and the Yehudi Menuhin School, while regularly teaching at summer schools across Europe. John Turville’s multifaceted career continues to influence and energize the contemporary jazz landscape.
