About The Cars

The Cars, a pioneering Boston-based new wave band formed in 1976 by Ric Ocasek and Ben Orr, stand as one of America’s most influential rock acts of the late 1970s and 1980s. The quintet, completed by guitarist Elliot Easton, keyboardist Greg Hawkes, and drummer David Robinson, crafted a distinctive sound that fused proto-punk energy, garage rock grit, and catchy bubblegum pop, enriched by art rock influences from groups like Suicide, the Velvet Underground, and Roxy Music.

After honing their synergy in earlier projects such as Milkwood and Cap’n Swing, The Cars burst onto the scene with their self-titled debut album (1978). This record was propelled by hit singles like "Just What I Needed," "My Best Friend's Girl," and "Good Times Roll," and achieved six-times platinum status, fueled by the massive popularity of “Just What I Needed” on Boston’s WBCN radio. Their follow-up, "Candy-O" (1979), solidified their presence with the Top Ten single "Let's Go" and peaked at number three on the charts.

Continuing to evolve, The Cars explored more experimental sounds on "Panorama" (1980) while scoring their first Top Ten hit with "Shake It Up" (1981). Their commercial zenith arrived with "Heartbeat City" (1984), a pop-rock masterpiece featuring MTV classics like "You Might Think," "Magic," and the evocative "Drive." The album’s innovative, computer-animated videos became defining moments of the MTV era, leading to triple platinum success.

Despite releasing "Door to Door" (1987), internal tensions caused the band to disband in 1988. Ric Ocasek then gained acclaim as a producer, collaborating with artists such as Weezer, Bad Religion, and No Doubt. Tragically, Ben Orr passed away from pancreatic cancer in 2000, marking a poignant chapter in the band’s history.

In the mid-2000s, surviving members briefly formed The New Cars with Todd Rundgren before officially reuniting under the original name in 2011 to release "Move Like This." Produced by Jacknife Lee, this album debuted at number seven, affirming The Cars’ lasting impact on American rock and new wave music. Their innovative blend of styles and enduring hits continue to influence generations of musicians and listeners alike.
