About múm

Icelandic experimental pop collective múm emerged in 1997, founded by Gunnar Örn Tynes, Örvar Þóreyjarson Smárason, and the classically trained twin sisters Gyða and Kristín Anna Valtýsdóttir, who initially connected while working on a children’s theater project. Inspired by electronic innovators like Aphex Twin, múm broke away from traditional guitar-driven music, crafting a distinctive sound that blends whimsical electronic textures with acoustic and unconventional instruments. Their debut album, "Yesterday Was Dramatic – Today Is OK" (2000), released while the members were still in their late teens, introduced their imaginative style to both Iceland and the UK, earning early international acclaim.

The follow-up, "Finally We Are No One" (2002), further established their presence within folktronica and intelligent dance music circles. After Gyða briefly left to pursue academic studies, múm continued to evolve with albums such as "Summer Make Good" (2004), the EP "Dusk Log," and the live "Peel Session" (2006). Collaborative projects enriched their music, notably working with the National Dutch Chamber Orchestra in 2005 on a piece inspired by composer Iannis Xenakis. Their 2007 album, "Go Go Smear the Poison Ivy," saw contributions from artists like Ólöf Arnalds and Hildur Guðnadóttir, while "Sing Along to Songs You Don’t Know" (2009) reflected recordings across Finland, Estonia, and Iceland.

In 2013, múm surprised fans by teaming up with Kylie Minogue on the track "Whistle," featured on their album "Smilewound," which also marked Gyða’s return after a decade away. Over more than two decades, múm has maintained its status as a pioneering force in experimental electronic music, continuously blending innocent playfulness with sophisticated, textured soundscapes.
