About JD Pinkus

JD Pinkus, born in Austin, Texas, in 1967, is a pivotal figure in the underground music scene, renowned for his innovative contributions to punk and experimental rock. Launching his career at just 17, he joined the iconic Butthole Surfers in 1985, where he played an integral role for nearly a decade. During this time, Pinkus helped shape the band’s provocative and genre-defying sound, securing their place as cult legends in hardcore punk and noise rock. After stepping away in the mid-1990s, he reconnected with the Butthole Surfers over a decade later for celebrated reunion shows featuring the classic '80s and early '90s lineup, reigniting interest in their groundbreaking material.

Beyond his work with the Butthole Surfers, Pinkus has displayed remarkable versatility, collaborating with a diverse array of artists including the Melvins, Honky, Pure Luck, Helios Creed, Daddy Longhead, and Danny Barnes. His musicianship extends beyond bass guitar to innovative banjo compositions, underscoring his genre-blending artistry.

In recent years, JD Pinkus has embarked on a creative evolution with his solo work, most notably the 2021 album "Grow A Pear." This project exemplifies his experimental spirit, merging eclectic influences into a cohesive soundscape. Featuring contributions from esteemed collaborators such as Paul Leary, ShitKid, Sam Coomes, Michael Brueggen, and Tall Tall Trees, the album solidifies Pinkus’s reputation as a fearless boundary-pusher. Rooted firmly in Austin’s vibrant music community, JD Pinkus continues to inspire and redefine the possibilities of alternative rock music.
