About Maria Taylor

Maria Taylor, born in 1976 in Birmingham, Alabama, is a distinguished singer-songwriter known for her warm, intimate vocals and introspective lyricism. She first gained prominence as part of the pop/rock duo Little Red Rocket, which released the albums "Who Did You Pay" (1997) and "It's in the Sound" (2000) on Geffen Records. After the label’s corporate merger, Taylor relocated to Athens, Georgia, where she joined forces with Orenda Fink to form the dreamy indie pop duo Azure Ray. With critically acclaimed albums like "Burn and Shiver" (2002) and "Hold on Love" (2003), featuring the standout single "The Drinks We Drank Last Night," Azure Ray built a devoted following within the indie music scene.

Alongside her collaborative work, Maria Taylor launched a successful solo career beginning with her debut album "11:11" (2005), which showcased a blend of melancholic ballads and brighter melodies, drawing comparisons to icons such as Carole King and Laura Nyro. She continued to evolve her sound with releases including "Lynn Teeter Flower" (2007), "LadyLuck" (2009), "Overlook" (2011), and "Something About Knowing" (2013). Azure Ray reunited for "Drawing Down the Moon" (2010), while Taylor’s contemplative 2016 album "In the Next Life" reflected on life’s complex emotions. Throughout her career, Maria Taylor has lent her distinctive voice to projects by artists like Moby, Bright Eyes, and Crooked Fingers, solidifying her status as a memorable and influential figure in indie music.
