About Death in June

Death in June, formed in 1980 from the ashes of the punk band Crisis, is a seminal and controversial project in industrial and neofolk music. Founded by vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Douglas Pearce alongside bassist Tony Wakeford and drummer Patrick Leagas, the band made their live debut in 1981 opening for the Birthday Party. Their first release, the 12" single "Heaven Street," preceded their 1983 debut album "The Guilty Have No Pride," which blended abrasive electronics with martial rhythms and set the stage for their distinctive sound.

Despite persistent criticism over their use of fascist imagery, Death in June evolved sonically over the decades. After Wakeford’s departure to form Sol Invictus and Leagas’ exit to create Sixth Comm, Pearce became the sole driving force, transforming the project into largely a solo endeavor. Collaborations have been a hallmark of Death in June’s career, featuring artists like David Tibet of Current 93, Boyd Rice, and Coil’s John Balance.

The band’s style shifted from harsh industrial noise toward incorporating traditional European folk elements, evident in releases such as "Brown Book" (1987), "The Wall of Sacrifice" (1989), and "But, What Ends When the Symbols Shatter?" (1992). Notably, Death in June holds the distinction of being the first British act to perform in war-torn Croatia, an experience captured on the live album "Something Is Coming" (1993). Subsequent albums including "Rose Clouds of Holocaust" (1995), "Take Care and Control" (1997), and "Operation Hummingbird" (2000) further expanded their sound, while collaborations like 2001’s "All Pigs Must Die" with Andreas Ritter and 2004’s "Alarm Agents" with Boyd Rice underscored their enduring influence. With a career spanning over four decades, Death in June remains a pivotal force shaping industrial and neofolk music worldwide.
