About B.B. King

B.B. King, born Riley B. King in 1925 near Itta Bena in the Mississippi Delta, remains an iconic figure in blues music and one of the most influential electric guitarists of the 20th century. Growing up in a region steeped in blues tradition, his early influences ranged from gospel and country to blues legends like T-Bone Walker and jazz greats such as Charlie Christian. In 1948, King moved to Memphis, where his career took off while working as a DJ at WDIA, a groundbreaking all-Black radio station. It was here he earned his legendary nickname, evolving from "The Beale Street Blues Boy" to simply B.B.

King’s distinctive style—marked by his expressive bent notes, sharp, staccato picking, and soaring soulful vocals—captivated audiences for decades. His first national R&B hit, "Three O’Clock Blues" (1951), topped the charts and launched a remarkable recording career, resulting in over 70 Billboard R&B entries. Hits such as "You Know I Love You" and "Every Day I Have the Blues" cemented his status as a blues titan throughout the 1950s. In 1969, “The Thrill Is Gone” became a crossover sensation, reaching mainstream audiences with its string-laden, haunting sound.

B.B. King’s iconic guitar, "Lucille," famously named after a barroom incident, symbolizes his fiery spirit and dedication to his craft. A relentless touring artist, King performed over 300 shows annually well into the 21st century. His collaborative spirit saw him team up with luminaries like Eric Clapton—most notably on the album "Riding with the King" (2000)—as well as U2 and Bobby Bland. Landmark recordings such as *Live at the Regal* (1964) and the box set *Ladies and Gentlemen...Mr. B.B. King* (2012) celebrate his enduring legacy. King passed away in Las Vegas in 2015, leaving an indelible mark on blues and popular music worldwide.
