About The Varukers

Formed in 1979 in the UK punk underground, The Varukers quickly became seminal figures in the UK82 hardcore punk movement. Founded by vocalist Anthony "Rat" Martin alongside guitarist Bruce Riddel, bassist Tom Lowe, and drummer Gary Maloney, the band played a crucial role in popularizing the aggressive D-beat sound, a drumming style that profoundly influenced early thrash metal bands. Their politically charged and uncompromising style echoed the anarcho-punk ethos of their era, drawing comparisons with contemporaries like Discharge.

The Varukers burst onto the scene with their debut four-song EP released in 1981 on Birmingham’s Inferno Records, followed by the influential *I Don't Wanna Be a Victim* EP (1982) and the full-length album *Bloodsuckers* (1983) on Riot City Records. Demonstrating their DIY spirit, they launched their own Liberate Records imprint for the 1985 album *One Struggle, One Fight*, a record that further cemented their impact on punk and crossover metal scenes.

Despite numerous lineup changes, with Rat remaining the band’s unwavering core, The Varukers disbanded briefly in 1988. They reformed in 1993, continuing to tour and release albums such as *Still Bollox But Still Here* (1995), *Murder* (1998), and the critically embraced *Damned and Defiant* (2017). The latter saw a resurgence in popularity, reaching audiences in North America through Cleopatra Records.

Renowned for their relentless energy, politically charged lyrics, and raw sound, The Varukers remain influential veterans of British punk. Their live albums, rare demos, and reissues highlight a legacy built on uncompromising social commentary and an enduring, ferocious spirit.
