About Texas Is the Reason

Texas Is the Reason emerged from New York City's vibrant underground scene in 1994, quickly becoming a defining voice in the post-hardcore and emo genres of the mid-1990s. Founded by former Shelter guitarist Norm Arenas, ex-108 drummer Chris Daly, and bassist Scott Winegard, the band aimed to move beyond the aggressive machismo and religious themes typical of their previous projects. They soon added Garrett Klahn, whose distinctive nasal vocal delivery—often compared to Liam Gallagher’s tone—and magnetic stage presence set Texas Is the Reason apart from their peers.

Taking their name from a lyric in the Misfits’ song "Bullet," the group gained early acclaim with their self-titled debut EP and influential splits with Promise Ring and Samuel. Their sole full-length album, "Do You Know Who You Are?" (1996), produced by Jawbox’s J. Robbins, achieved critical success and became one of Revelation Records’ best-selling releases. Accompanied by extensive touring with labelmates Sense Field, the album solidified Texas Is the Reason’s place at the forefront of emo’s evolution.

Despite drawing interest from major labels and being hailed as the next big act in melodic post-hardcore, internal tensions led to their breakup in 1997. Members went on to pursue diverse musical ventures, yet Texas Is the Reason’s legacy endures as pioneers who blended emotional depth with raw intensity. Their brief reunion for a celebrated 2006 show at New York’s Irving Plaza reaffirmed their lasting influence on generations of indie and emo bands.
