About MISIA

MISIA, born Misaki Ito in Fukuoka, Japan, is widely celebrated as a trailblazer in Japanese R&B, known for her extraordinary five-octave vocal range that reportedly reaches frequencies beyond human hearing. Raised in a music-loving family and influenced by the rock scene of her hometown, she discovered her true passion for R&B in high school, inspired by African-American vocal instructors who shaped her unique style.

In 1997, MISIA won a highly competitive audition with BMG Records, beating over 3,000 candidates, and decided to leave Seinan Gakuin University to pursue a music career. Her breakthrough came in 1998 with the debut single "Tsutsumikomu You Ni...," which remained on the charts for 27 weeks and sold 400,000 copies. Following this success, her debut album, "Mother Father Brother Sister" (1998), dominated the charts for four consecutive weeks, selling over 2.5 million copies and earning her two Japan Gold Disc Awards.

MISIA continued to influence the Japanese pop and R&B scenes with hit albums like "Love Is the Message" (2000) and "Marvelous" (2001), each selling millions. She has collaborated with prominent artists such as Tak Matsumoto from B’z and Masato Nakamura of Dreams Come True. After transferring to Avex’s Rhythmedia Tribe label in 2002, MISIA became the first female solo artist to complete Japan’s prestigious “five domes” tour in 2004, a testament to her widespread appeal. Returning to BMG, she released "Eighth World" (2008) and expanded her reach with international tours across Asia. Her ninth album, "Just Ballade" (2009), reaffirmed her status as a pioneering and enduring icon in Japanese music history.
