About Girls in Hawaii

Girls in Hawaii is a Belgian indie pop and rock band that originated from the creative partnership of Antoine Wielemans and Lio Vancauwenberge. Formed in a small provincial town, the duo transformed youthful boredom into songwriting, crafting melodies marked by heartfelt lyrics and harmonious intricacy. Their 2003 debut album, "From Here to There," quickly gained critical acclaim, with many critics noting that had they been English, widespread stardom might have followed swiftly. Instead, their Belgian roots guided a steady ascent within the indie music scene.

Their follow-up album, "Plan Your Escape" (2008), explored themes of uncertainty and the urge to break free from life's pressures, reflecting the band members’ personal growth. Tragedy deeply affected the group in 2013 with the loss of their drummer Denis, an event that shaped their poignant third album, "Everest." This record wrestled with grief and resilience, marking a somber yet powerful chapter in their evolution. After a brief hiatus, Girls in Hawaii returned in 2017 with "Nocturne," an album notable for its spontaneous and fluid creative process. Antoine and Lio composed the songs independently, likening the album’s dynamic style to a Jackson Pollock painting—abstract, instinctive, and agile.

Throughout their career, Girls in Hawaii has steadily built a devoted following by blending emotional depth with evolving soundscapes, securing their place as a vital force within Belgium’s vibrant indie rock landscape.
