About Metric

Metric is a pioneering indie rock band that originated in Toronto in 1998, founded by the songwriting duo Emily Haines and Jimmy Shaw. Seeking creative collaborators who shared their vision, they relocated to New York City, where drummer Joules Scott-Key and bassist Joshua Winstead joined the lineup around 2001-2002. This placed Metric at the heart of NYC’s vibrant alternative rock scene, alongside influential acts like LCD Soundsystem and The Strokes.

What truly sets Metric apart is their steadfast dedication to artistic independence. Eschewing major label offers, the band has released nine adventurous studio albums through their own imprint, MMI, and distributors like Thirty Tigers. Their sound blends Canadian indie rock with new wave influences, characterized by boundary-pushing, genre-defying songwriting.

Among their celebrated works, the critically acclaimed 2022 album "Formentera" and its 2024 follow-up "Formentera II" form an ambitious 18-song cycle that highlights some of Metric’s most innovative and forward-thinking material to date. Over more than two decades, they have earned multiple Juno Awards, including Group of the Year and Alternative Album, cementing their status as trailblazers who continually uphold artistic integrity while cultivating a devoted global fanbase.
