About Sherman Irby

Sherman Irby, born in 1968 in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, is a celebrated post-bop alto saxophonist known for his vibrant contributions to contemporary jazz. His musical journey began with studying viola, guitar, and piano before he discovered his true passion for the saxophone in his teenage years. While earning a degree in music education at Clark-Atlanta University, Irby excelled in both classical music and the university’s jazz orchestra. Despite his academic background, he chose to fully devote himself to performance rather than teaching.

Early in his career, Irby honed his craft alongside prominent Atlanta jazz musicians like pianist Johnny O’Neal and trumpeter Eddie Adams. In 1994, he spent nearly three years performing on cruise ships, a formative experience that preceded his relocation to New York City. There, regular gigs at the famed Smalls jazz club with his quartet—including pianist James Hurt, bassist Eric Revis, and drummer Dana Murray—earned him significant recognition. This exposure led to a contract with Blue Note Records, culminating in his debut album "Full Circle" (1997) and its follow-up, "Big Mama’s Biscuits" (1998).

Irby’s collaborations with jazz legends such as Roy Hargrove, Wynton Marsalis, and Marcus Roberts further solidified his standing in the jazz world. Demonstrating entrepreneurial drive, he founded Black Warrior Records, releasing critically acclaimed albums like "Black Warrior" (2001), "Faith" (2004), and "Organ Starter" (2006). As a long-time member of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, Sherman Irby remains a dynamic and influential figure, celebrated for his expressive saxophone style and unwavering dedication to jazz artistry.
