About Van Canto

Van Canto emerged in 2006 as a groundbreaking force in the German metal scene, pioneering the niche of a cappella heavy metal. Founded by lead vocalists Dennis Schunke and Inga Scharf, the band features five classically trained singers who uniquely replicate metal's iconic guitar riffs and bass lines using vocal techniques dubbed "rakkatakka" and "doom bass." Backed by a live drummer, this innovative setup creates a powerful soundscape unlike any other metal act.

Their debut album, "A Storm to Come" (2006), garnered international acclaim, especially for their vocal interpretation of Metallica's "Battery." Building on this success, Van Canto’s 2008 album "Hero" combined original tracks with striking covers such as Nightwish's "Wishmaster" and Iron Maiden's "Fear of the Dark," featuring a collaboration with Blind Guardian’s Hansi Kürsch. Signing with Napalm Records catalyzed further achievements, including "Tribe of Force" (2010) and the commercially successful "Break the Silence" (2011), which reached Germany’s Top 30 and spotlighted Sabaton’s Joakim Brodén on "Primo Victoria."

Van Canto continued to expand their vocal artistry with ambitious projects like the concept album "Voices of Fire" (2016), inspired by German fantasy literature and narrated by John Rhys-Davies. Their 2018 release, "Trust In Rust," introduced male vocalist Hagen Hirschmann and featured covers from AC/DC and Helloween, alongside guest appearances from metal legends like Kai Hansen. Returning founding singer Dennis Schunke joined Hirschmann and Scharf for 2021’s "To The Power of Eight," which blended original songs with dynamic covers, solidifying Van Canto’s status as trailblazers who captivate global audiences with their vocal-driven metal innovation.
