About Peter Gabriel

Peter Gabriel, born in 1950 in Chobham, England, first rose to prominence as the charismatic lead singer of the progressive rock band Genesis. After leaving the group in 1975, he embarked on a trailblazing solo career marked by a distinctive fusion of experimental rock, world music, and innovative technology. Over several decades, Gabriel has released eleven solo albums, including iconic works like *So* (1986), featuring hits such as "Sledgehammer," that solidified his reputation as a groundbreaking artist. His musical versatility extends beyond albums, having composed soundtracks for three films, further highlighting his creative range.

Beyond his music, Peter Gabriel has made significant contributions as a cultural ambassador and humanitarian. In 1980, he founded the World of Music, Arts and Dance (WOMAD) festival, which has since hosted over 170 events across more than 30 countries, celebrating global musical diversity. This passion also led him to establish Real World Records in 1989, a label dedicated to promoting talented international artists like Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Sheila Chandra, and The Gloaming by providing access to state-of-the-art recording facilities.

Gabriel’s commitment to social justice is equally profound. He participated in Amnesty International’s 1988 Human Rights Now! Tour, which inspired him to co-found Witness.org in 1992, pioneering the use of video as an activist tool. Additionally, in partnership with Richard Branson, he helped establish The Elders in 2007—a coalition of global leaders initiated by Nelson Mandela to address worldwide challenges. Today, Peter Gabriel continues to innovate, exploring projects like a streaming platform for digital medicine and concepts such as the Interspecies Internet, cementing his legacy as an artist who continuously pushes creative and humanitarian boundaries.
