About The New Pornographers

The New Pornographers, a Canadian indie rock collective formed in Vancouver in 1997 by Carl Newman, have long stood out for their sophisticated power pop sound and dynamic collaborations. Named after a Japanese film by Shōhei Imamura, the group quickly captured attention with their debut album, "Mass Romantic" (2000), which earned the Juno Award for Alternative Album of the Year. The band’s lineup features an impressive roster of singer-songwriters, including Neko Case, Dan Bejar (Destroyer), John Collins, Todd Fancey, and drummer Kurt Dahle, among others. This unique assembly of talent has often led to The New Pornographers being labeled a supergroup, yet they maintain a cohesive sonic identity that blends intricate pop melodies with rock energy, drawing comparisons to classic power pop acts like The Cars and Cheap Trick.

Their follow-up records, including "Electric Version" (2003) and the critically acclaimed "Twin Cinema" (2005)—a Polaris Music Prize nominee—cemented their reputation. Subsequent albums such as "Challengers" (2007), "Together" (2010), and the commercially successful "Brill Bruisers" (2014), which peaked at number 13 on the Billboard 200, showcased their evolving sound. With shifts in personnel—most notably Dan Bejar’s hiatus and the addition of Kathryn Calder and Simi Stone—the band has continued to thrive. Their later works, including "Whiteout Conditions" (2017), "In the Morse Code of Brake Lights" (2019), and their ninth studio album "Continue as a Guest" (2023) released through Merge Records, affirm The New Pornographers’ enduring vitality and influence in the indie rock landscape.
